Geology lab

Engineering Geology Laboratory

Engineering geology is the application of geologic principles to engineering works. It means all constructions built on the earth such as road, bridges, buildings, dams, tunnels, rails and etc. for the purpose of assuring that the geologic factors affecting the location, design, construction, operation and maintenance of civil engineering projects.

Engineering geology laboratory is one of the lab in civil engineering department, in this lab student will be introduced some basic principle of geologic properties, also identification of different types of rocks and understanding their behavior are the major objectives of geology

These experiments will be taught in the first stage of the civil engineering department

  • Physical properties of Minerals (Color, streak, cleavage, fracture, hardness and Specific gravity)
  • Descriptions and their identifying characteristics of different types of rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic Rocks)
  • Effect calcite reacting with acid
  • Sphericity and Roundness of the rock
  • Geological and topographic map, Introducing the geological featurism map scale, contour line
  • Determine Strength Index of the rock
  • Soil Formation and particle size
